13 students from the the international department competed against each other to get the final tickets to represent HES at the Manitoba International Marketing Competition. Me (jimmy), Eeke and Jelle were really excited and looking forward to this day. Do you wanna know more. Let’s find out how we (Eeke and Jimmy) experienced this day!

Prepration

Thursday morning  we received an email from Mr. Molenaar regarding the qualification instructions. I was still sleeping, but somebody woke me up to tell me the awesome news! Me and Eeke were selected in the same group together with our friend Seline, who was the leader. We immediately made an appointment for friday to discuss the case, which appeared in the book: Strategic Market Management by D. Aager & D.Mcloughlin. In the meanwhile, 1 of our team member dropped out, because he had other plans in January, while another one just never replied to our emails. So we were basically down to 3 people.

During the meetings we discussed a lot of marketing strategies and things that we should & shouldn’t do during the presentation. Another thing that we wanted was to present on an Apple Macbook, which is more impressive to look at than a powerpoint presentation from Microsoft. Also the view that we got from the top of the OBA building also gave us some inspirations and motivation to work on something that rewards us with tickets to represent our school in Canada.

The moment of truth

The presentation started at monday at 16:45, which was not really in my favor, because i was having another presentation for the MIA course around the same time, which I also had to prepare for, since it was directed to KLM representatives. So first I was kinda worried how I should figure that out, because I was placed in team A(MIMC) and team 1(MIA). That means presenting as the first team, but luckily I managed to change the order of the presentations, so that it wouldn’t conflict.

Our team was really eager to brings this to a happy ending so we were present in room 0.012 to work on some minor changes, which surprisingly took us more time than expected. Before we knew the jury came into the room and we forgot the rehears our speech, because we to focussed on the details that we wanna show everybody. So we had to improvise everything that we wanna say, because the speech was never written anywhere. Since we were down to 3 members, we had more time to explains the parts that we were presenting, which turned out to be a positive thing after all.

Seline, our team captain started the presentation by presenting the team and the case, 2 other teams and 2 Juries (Mr. Molenaar and Mrs. Timmermans) were in the audience to judge us. I was the second speaker, while Eeke finished the presentation. I noticed during the presentation that both judges were flipping in the book to look for some important information, since they were both really focus on it. I was even wondered if they were paying attention to us, but it was only for a sec. So it was not that disturbing after all.

Other teams

The other teams were all complete and dressed up for the presentation. I, unfortunately could not attend the presentation that was held after ours, because I was presenting another one in the room next door, which we won!!! So, i went back for the third presentation to see how our Babylonix friend Jelle was doing. He was not as dressed as the second team, but his pink dress shirt did just fine with the ladies in his team.

After the third presentation the jury told us that the best 5 will be presented at the end of the week and that 1 back-up member will be selected as well, for in case something happens. So, if you wanna know more about this awesome competition: I’ll keep you guys posted!
